It’s no secret that AI is dominating headlines, conference room conversations, and strategic planning sessions. But here’s the thing I’m learning as I talk to clients and contacts:
Everyone’s at a different place in the AI journey — and that’s okay.
In my conversations with leaders across industries — from seasoned CEOs to rising senior execs to frontline managers — I’m reminded that AI readiness isn’t a simple “you’re using it” or “you’re not.”
There’s a progression. And recognizing where you are in that progression is the key to moving forward with confidence and purpose.
Let’s think about it in stages of adoption.
The 5 Stages of AI Adoption
These are the most common stages I see among leaders and organizations:
1. Aware
You know AI exists. You’ve heard about ChatGPT or seen AI-generated art online. But you haven’t experimented with any tools yourself. AI feels like something for tech folks or startups — not your world.
2. Testing
You’ve tried typing something into ChatGPT or another AI tool. Maybe it helped you write a paragraph or answer a quick question. You were curious, but you haven’t yet woven it into your work.
3. Exploring
You’re going beyond the basics. You’ve tested AI for images, design, maybe even code or content generation. You’ve watched a few demos or tried integrating AI tools into your creative or operational processes.
4. Integrating
AI is starting to become part of your regular workflow. You pause before jumping into a task and ask, “How could an AI tool help here?” You’re using it to increase efficiency, brainstorm faster, or produce higher-quality outputs.
5. Automating
This is the sweet spot: you’re no longer just using AI — you’re designing processes around it. Repetitive tasks are being handled by AI agents or automations. Your team is freed up to focus on the work that truly needs human creativity, strategy, and leadership.
Where Are You on This Path?
Take a moment to reflect. Which stage feels most like where you are today?
There’s no wrong answer. There’s no shame in starting at Stage 1 or pride in rushing to Stage 5. What matters is recognizing your starting point — and mapping out the next right step.
And here’s the best part: you don’t need to leap ahead. You only need to level up one stage at a time
How to Progress to the Next Stage
No matter where you are, the path forward can be simple:
- Pick one tool — and master it. Instead of chasing every new AI app, go deep on one. Get comfortable. Watch tutorials. Use it in a real work scenario.
- Explore within a category. If you’re in marketing, try AI for writing, design, and analysis. In operations? Look at scheduling, automation, or customer service bots.
- Start asking “AI First” questions. Before starting a task, ask: “Could an AI tool help me do this faster or better?” And then use an AI tool or chatbot to help you think differently or to draft new content. That single mindset shift can unlock incredible efficiencies.
You Don’t Need to Do This Alone
If you’re feeling overwhelmed — that’s normal. The pace of change is fast. And the options are endless.
But you don’t have to figure this out solo. Whether you’re a solo founder, leading a 50-person team, or driving strategy at a $50M organization, you deserve a trusted guide to help you navigate what’s next.
If you’re curious about how to bring AI into your workflow or want to make your organization more productive without burning people out, reach out. I’d love to help you find the right next step in your AI transformation journey.
